What is Microsoft Authenticator?

Microsoft Authenticator is a free mobile app that helps protect your accounts through multifactor authentication (MFA). It generates one-time passcodes and sends secure sign-in notifications, offering stronger protection and a smoother experience than text messages or phone calls.

Follow the steps below to download and set up Microsoft Authenticator on your device.

1. Download Microsoft Authenticator

Install the app from your device’s app store:

2. Add Microsoft Authenticator as a sign-in method

You’ll now add Authenticator as a sign-in method for your university account.

It’s easiest to complete these steps using both your computer and your mobile device.

  • On your computer, go to
  • Select Add method → Authenticator app → Add.
  • A QR code will appear on your computer screen. Keep this page open for the next step.

3. Connect your account to the App

  • On your mobile device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Tap the + icon → Add account → Work or school account → Scan a QR code.
  • Use your phone to scan the QR code shown on your computer.
  • Approve the notification that appears in the app.
  • On your computer, you’ll see a confirmation message once setup is complete.

4. Make Authenticator Your Default MFA Method (Recommended)

To make Authenticator your default sign-in method:

  • Go to
  • select Change next to Default sign-in method.
  • Choose Microsoft Authenticator – notification.
