Internship Program

Interested in joining our team for the upcoming year?


The ASUM Legislative Team is made up of 8 Legislative Interns and 2 Legislative Directors, Evan Rainville (University of Missouri-Columbia) and Grace Desjardins (University of Missouri-St. Louis). The team represents UM System students at the Missouri Capitol each Spring. This Spring, the team will be present at the Capitol in Jefferson City from 9 AM to 3 PM each Tuesday and Thursday.


Important dates for the application and selection process:
Internship Application Opens - September 29th
Internship Application Closes - October 31st
First Round of Interviews - November 3rd-7th
System Interviews - November 10-14th
Mandatory Intern Training - December 12-13th


Standard eligibility requirements:
1. Full-time student (undergraduate or graduate/professional) attending Mizzou, UMKC, UMSL, or Missouri S&T.
2. Be available to work in Jefferson City 9 AM - 3 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Spring Semester, beginning on January 7th.
3. Be available to attend intern training on December 12-13th in Columbia.
4. Be eligible to be registered as a lobbyist in Missouri (Not currently holding an elected
office).
5. Complete and submit the application prior to Friday, October 31st, 2025, at 11:59pm.


Interns will have the opportunity to: 

  •  Track higher education legislation & advocate for the ASUM policy platform.

  •  Develop an understanding of state politics & form an extensive professional
    network.

  •  Work as a registered lobbyist at the Missouri State Capitol.
     Facilitate meetings with legislators and their staff to propose and discuss policy.
     Independently research assigned policy topics to create policy proposals.

  •  Earn a $2,000 stipend.

  •  Seek 3-6 hours of academic credit.

  •  Participate in the civic engagement branch of ASUM at the Chapter level. 

  • Engage with the student voice at relevant campus events

     

    Academic Credit

    Academic credit is not guaranteed as a matter of participation in this program, but is a possibility. It is ultimately the responsibility of the student-intern to discuss the program with their academic unit and advisor to determine eligibility for credit, which we greatly encourage. If a student is eligible to and elects to receive academic credit for the internship, the student is responsible for paying any costs associated with said credit hours and completing any additional assignments as required by the instructor.

    Compensation

    Interns will receive a $2,000 stipend, paid in two $1,000 installments in February and May, contingent on completion of the internship. Interns will also receive compensation for approved travel expenses. To ensure you have adequate time to  make informed financial decisions, your compensation will be finalized upon your acceptance into the program.
